Quantum Cyber, a Connecticut-based company specializing in autonomous defense technology, has taken the next big step in realizing its “AI-powered, quantum-accelerated System-of-Systems platform” for drone warfare . The company, which is using quantum computing to advance autonomous drone systems, has purchased and installed 80 3D printers at its 3D printing drone production farm in Bridgeport. The 3D printing farm, found at the company’s newly acquired 50,000-square-foot facility, will be responsible for manufacturing various components, including airframe structures, enclosures, and subassemblies for Quantum Cyber’s various autonomous drone systems. Specifically, the company said the 3D printing units will support its upcoming one-way attack, interceptor, surveillance, VTOL, and long-range PHANTOM-950 product lines. The 3D printers themselves are extrusion-based systems that will primarily be printing PETG filament and a material called Formula A, a patent-pending EMP-shielding composite filament. Formula A itself is made from a matrix of PETG with reinforcement of aluminum flake, carbonyl iron powder, carbon black, and milled carbon fiber. These additives gives the material full-spectrum EMP shielding (of 35 to 55 dB across the full frequency range of 10 kHz to 10 GHz, as measured per ASTM D4935). Quantum Cyber’s new facility is based in Bridgeport, Connecticut Both the PETG and Formula A filaments will be manufactured by Quantum Cyber, which plans to open an Advanced Filament Manufacturing Division as part of its vertical integration strategy. As the company says, having control over its own filament production will give it greater supply chain independence and help protect its proprietary formulations. This filament production site will also be based at the company’s new Bridgeport facility. Just a month before completing the installation of its 80-unit 3D printing farm, Quantum Cyber manufactured and assembled its first mini-interceptor drone at the Bridgeport site. For the company, this assembly represented the shift it is making from being a technology development and IP licensing platform to a “vertically integrated autonomous defense manufacturer with domestic production capacity under its own control”. Bringing the 3D printing farm online will mark the next major step in this evolution. “Purchasing and installing 80 printers moves the drone production line from a plan to a physical asset on our factory floor,” commented David Lazar, CEO of Quantum Cyber.
