The entity is headquartered in Munich, where the company already operates following its acquisition of laser communications specialist Mynaric AG . The announcement is deliberately conditional. Rocket Lab describes itself as pursuing opportunities that could lead to manufacturing in Germany and supporting the potential future scaling of production there. “The demand for sovereign space capability has never been more urgent. Photo via Rocket Lab. An acquisition that became a foothold Rocket Lab completed the Mynaric purchase on April 14 , paying $155.3 million in a nominal cash payment plus 2,277,002 common shares. The deal had been signalled over a year earlier, when Rocket Lab entered a non-binding term sheet with Mynaric’s lenders at an initial price near $75 million. Familiarity drove the transaction. Mynaric was already a Rocket Lab subcontractor, supplying CONDOR Mk3 optical communications terminals for prime contracts worth $1.3 billion to build 36 satellites for the Space Development Agency’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture. Rocket Lab has said the supplier relationship gave it insight into how the terminals could be scaled and where efficiencies sat, the same production-engineering argument it now applies to the wider German plan. Building Sovereign Space Capability in Europe Rocket Lab’s German subsidiary reflects a strategy of embedding itself directly into the customer base it wants to serve: rather than exporting finished spacecraft into Europe, the company is establishing local legal and manufacturing infrastructure, built on an acquired supplier’s existing footprint, to compete for European institutional and defense demand on the ground where that demand originates. Other players are pursuing the same logic on the launch side.
